The Muscatine community Y houses a wide variety of programs, including the YPlay before and after school program, Big Brothers Big Sisters, The Special Olympics, and many more adult and teen programs. The facility is need of a serious facelift and the capital campaign received a big boost recently. “We received a matching pledge from an anonymous donor that will match funds up to $500,000,” said Y Director Bret Olson. Amy Hessel, Character Development Director, said, “We are so excited about these renovations. It will really help all of the programs that we put on here.” Hessel oversees the teen and youth programs at the Y.
The Y is a cornerstone for physical wellness, but the mission of the organization is so much more than that. The goal is to develop the youth of Muscatine and promote healthy living and social responsibility.
The community has pledged $5.9 million of the $7.5 million goal. “The hope is that with this $500,000 match, we can turn that into $1 million and that will leave $600,000 left to raise,” said Olson.
New architectural renderings have been released as the overall design has changed. A new gymnasium, as well as upgraded overall facilities, are a part of the major expansion. For more information on how to give to the project, visit www.muscatiney.org.
