The Muscatine Art Center offers many activities for visitors during the summer. The Art Center has programs for all ages, and with their recent renovations and addition of a kid’s area, the summer looks to be an exciting one.
Teresa Stenstrup is the Program Coordinator at the Muscatine Art Center and she has put together a selection of classes for children and adults to enjoy.
The Art Center hosts Tots Classes geared toward ages two through five. These classes are an opportunity to introduce young children to art and the Art Center. The classes include a story and two art projects to go along with the story. For June, they have been celebrating America and are doing projects such as patriotic sun catchers. In July they’re focusing on stories about making art, and in August, they are reading classics such as The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
The Art Center is also holding free Saturday Kids Classes. These classes are for ages 5 to 14 and will focus on famous artists. The kids will learn about a different artist each week and create a project inspired by the artist they are studying.
Stenstrup believes these classes are important for children for many reasons. “The classes are important because a lot of people don’t know about the Art Center and the resources we have. Many people, especially children, don’t have a chance to be introduced to art, and it’s important for them to have a chance to express themselves. They need a creative outlet and a chance to get their creative juices flowing. With our classes, they have someone there to help them explore art, but they are making their own project, and it’s always great to see their excitement when they’ve made something.”
For adults, the Art Center will have Red Barn Studio classes with Vada Baker. These classes teach acrylic and watercolor painting skills. Each class, participants will create a project, and all supplies are included in the class fee.
Along with the regularly scheduled classes, the Art Center will also host special events such as their Annual Ice Cream Social on June 25. The social will be a Sunday afternoon of live music, projects and games for kids, and a variety of desserts.
