On March 26th, at approximately 6:37 pm,  Louisa County Sherriff’s office received a call about a disturbance at a residence in rural Columbus Junction located in the 18,000 block of county road x17. The caller advised that the subject causing the disturbance was Cody France of Muscatine, Iowa.

Approximately five minutes later, the caller advised that France fired several rounds at her with a semi-automatic handgun. France left the scene driving a tan Toyota sports utility vehicle pursuit ensued, reaching speeds of approximately eighty miles per hour. Muscatine County Sherriff’s office assisted in the pursuit and a trooper with Iowa state patrol was able to deploy tire deflation sticks, deflating one of the drivers front tires. France continued to try and elude police, eventually coming to rest in a farm field North East of Fredonia.

Deputies tried to establish communication with France but were unable to do so. A tactical team approached the suspect vehicle and found France deceased in the front seat. It was later determined that France died from a single self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Besides France, no other casualty’s or physical injuries occurred during this incident.

Law enforcement considers this a family dispute situation and not random.

The investigation is still ongoing.

Agencies assisting the Louisa County Sherrif’s Office included Iowa State Patrol, Muscatine County Sheriff’s Office, Washington County Sherriff’s Office, Muscatine Police Department, Columbus Junction Police Department, Winfield Police Department, and Columbus Junction Ambulance Service.
