With a few weeks left in July, our radio stations and the Voice of Muscatine newspaper couldn’t be busier! Recently, we’ve been broadcasting live from all over Muscatine and the surrounding communities, with no signs of slowing down anytime soon. That’s all good and certainly nothing to complain about.

What I’m always continuing to work on is finding the balance between working a lot while not missing out on quality time with my family and friends. Simon Sinek said of this topic: “Working hard for something we don’t care about is called stress; working hard for something we love is called passion.” I’m passionate about being a good husband to my wife and a father to my children, and at the same time I’m passionate about my job, so how can I balance perfectly?

I can’t. I think that’s the realization that many of us need to come to. There will always be areas of work and home that we can improve in, but we can’t rewind the tape, so to speak. I’m fortunate to be at a place in my career where I can decide to be as busy or not as I want to be. Lately I’ve been choosing to be extremely busy, while also making sure that the time with my family is quality and that I’m quite frankly there in the moment with them.

My advice? When you’re having family or friends time, put down the smart phone. Plug in to what’s going on in the lives of the people you care about. I’m sure you’ll be able to catch Pokemon another time. Have a meaningful conversation, debate your significant other (keep it spirited), and get involved with your children. I’m realizing personally that my boys are growing up FAST. I blinked and my oldest went from puking on my shoulder to asking me pointed questions about what I do on the radio. Wild!

Here’s to finding a balance that works for all of us, even if that balance is hitting a drive thru for ice cream with your family on a hot July afternoon.
