The Durant Wildcats went into their regional game with L-M wanting one thing: a state title, which is exactly what they got.
The Durant girls softball team consists of 18 players ranging from 8th grade to seniors who have just graduated. Durant’s 35-8 record has made them more confident and willing than before, giving them their first softball title. Once the Wildcats started their winning streak of the season, there was no stopping them.
Durant’s successful season has made it possible for them to make it to the state tournament. The Wildcats defeated Bellevue 9-3, Wapello 9-1, and L-M 7-6.
The Wildcats and Falcons boggled back and forth until they were in the 9th inning of the nail-biting game that would determine which team made it to state. It was Ruby Kappeler’s single in the 9th inning that gave them the winning run.
Although the Wildcats were down in parts of the game, they held their heads high and never gave up. The girls played as a team and continued to build each other up even when things were getting difficult.
Let’s wish some luck to the Wildcats as they leave an impression at the state tournament.
