When Muscatine native Neoma Foster says, “Everybody at Trinity Muscatine was just great,” believe her. Neoma knows. Neoma recently had her second hip replacement, and before that she had both knees replaced. “From staff at the orthopedic clinic to everyone at the hospital, they were all right there for me. Dr. Friessen was great. I had surgery one day and was out the next afternoon,” Neoma said.

Neoma had her right hip replaced in 1995 and more recently her left. Her husband of 48 years, Thomas, lovingly calls her the “bionic woman.” “I knew after my second knee replacement my right hip was giving me fits,” said Neoma. “I used to go for walks a couple times a day, but I couldn’t do that anymore. I had trouble even walking to get the mail.”

Luckily, Neoma has a great partner in Tom. The Muscatine couple has three children, four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and two dogs that help liven up the household. “Tom did most of the household chores and the cooking,” said Neoma.

These days, knee and hip replacements are common. You may have a family member or friend who has had some type of joint replacement surgery. Joint replacement removes a damaged joint and replaces it with in new one. At times, it is possible to repair or replace the impaired parts, rather than removing an entire joint. Replacing a joint may help relieve pain and help you move and feel better. The procedure helps enhance your quality of life. Other types of joint replacement or repair may address shoulders, fingers, ankles, and elbows.

Although the technology has changed over time and helped make knee and hip replacements simpler and less painful, as Neoma found, one thing has not: the care of UnityPoint Health professionals at North Port who are focused on outstanding patient experiences.
