Some Muscatine area parents received a phone call on Thursday afternoon notifying them of a mumps outbreak at Central Middle School.  According to the school district, there is one reported case at the middle school level.

According to Trinity Point Public Health, 5 previous cases have been confirmed in Muscatine county, in addition to the case today.

Symptoms of mumps include headache, fever, swollen glands in the neck or jaw.  These symptoms can develop as much as 12-25 days after exposure.

Any individual who feel that they may have come in contact with an infected person, should phone their doctor to make arrangements for care.

Infected persons will need to avoid public interaction until five days after their symptons have cleared and they are feeling better.
