Intolerance and injustice. The topic is wide, the dynamics are varied, but seventh-grade students at Central Middle School are taking a hard look at what intolerance looks like and how it affects the world around them.
Students in groups of four have been researching various topics, including racism and sexism in sports, intolerance in fiction, in music, and even a look at World War II and the Nazi intolerance of the Jewish people.
Each student selected a particular area that fell under the category to research and write about. Articles from each member were added to a magazine-style layout for presentation.
The groups presented their magazines to members of the local media who operated as judges. Students were judged on professionalism, knowledge of the subject, overall presentation, and several other criteria.
The presentations were divided into two sessions, one in the morning and one in the afternoon.
The winning group will be provided with a tour of the studios of Vintage Sound 93.1 and KWPC AM 860 FM 95.1 as well as a tour of the office of Voice of Muscatine.
