I have written two other articles for “Building Bridges” as a pastor and member of the Muscatine Ministerial Association. The first was a wakeup call to parents and the second was reaching out to the troubled individual with no help … or at least what seems like no help out of the crappy sewer of darkness. I gave my personal phone number, 563-599-6708, for anyone who would like to change or accept a friend’s hand. I was so shocked ! Guess what: optimistically, I had hoped at least one person might give an action call. One of those super-powered heroes from the comedy books.
The comedy was on me. Zero. Nil. Nada.
So now, if I had any chance of winning the lottery (the odds being one in 292 million), I might take that risk with the purchase of one or two lottery tickets. But what if my odds were one in thirty-two? I definitely would buy a ticket.
Actually, I would chance up to thirty-two at the cost of $1.00 each. Financially the lottery winning sure would help me out. And I can see me helping my children, and I know some would be donated to help with a nonprofitable organization. But then I would be hounded by people all with good causes and others who want to scam. I would be greedier and want more stuff. Probably I would dine at fancier places and maybe get a bigger head than the one I already have. Money sometimes is the “root of all evil.” But besides all of that, it is the risk …. sometimes the thrill of it all.
Did you know:
- The overall crime rate in Muscatine is 11% higher than the national average.
- For every 100,000 people, there are 8.66 daily crimes that occur in Muscatine.
- Muscatine is safer than 20% of the cities in the United States.
- In Muscatine you have a 1 in 32 chance of becoming a victim of any crime.
- The number of total year over year crimes in Muscatine has increased by 21%.*
So now you have the facts. Now you know the odds of violence in our community of Muscatine.
What will you do? “Action speaks louder than words.” What type of action are you? Are you the organizations listed below? Or are you the action that causes the violence? Or are you the victim with no action? Please think about this! What are the odds that you will be the victim or the cause of violence? One in thirty-two. So now I ask you: Can you be a “Super Action Hero?”
To take action, consider supporting one of these causes:
The Muscatine Center for Social Action
312 Iowa Avenue, Muscatine
Domestic Violence Shelter
Crisis hotline: (563) 263-8080
Iowa Coalition Against Domestic Violence
