The Salvation Army of Muscatine began the Red Kettle Christmas Campaign with a goal of raising $165,000. These funds collected at Christmas are used beyond the holiday season and benefit the organization and ultimately the community throughout the year.
In addition to the kettle campaign, funds are collected through two other primary sources.
Mail appeal is the program which sends requests for donations to mailboxes throughout the area. Money can then be mailed to the office, and that amount is included in the overall total.
The second form of mail that is received is referred to as “white mail.” White mail includes cards and letters that include checks or donations to the Salvation Army that are received throughout the holiday season. These funds are also added to the overall campaign total for the year.
The collection season for kettles will continue through noon on December 23.
Individuals looking to make end-of-year donations for tax purposes can still do so and have that amount added into the Christmas total. In addition, all donations received through either mail appeal or white mail through the end of January will be counted in the total.
Funding received during the holiday season sustains programs throughout the year.
In addition to emergency food baskets, the Salvation Army provides emergency services on a case-by-case basis. Some of those needs include gas or gas cards for families with illnesses, including cancer, that need to travel outside of town for care, utility bills payment, programming for children throughout the year, regular free meals that are open to the public, and much more.
