Share time, words and intention to help children learn

Submitted by Iowa State Extension and Outreach, Muscatine County Reading and talking to children, even infants and toddlers, is a good way to increase their language skills, says Barbara Dunn Swanson, a human sciences specialist with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. Children begin learning very early in their lives. Infants and toddlers are busy analyzing their world. They’re figuring out how they are separate from everything they see. They’re beginning to identify objects and routines and who they can depend on for their everyday care. They also are beginning to understand that movements and sounds are used to...

Local writer wins award

Misty Urban has wanted to be a writer for as long as she can remember–“since I was born.” Originally from Wisconsin, Urban received her Master’s in Fine Arts in fiction and a Ph.D. in Old and Middle English literature from Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. Recently, Urban was named the winner of the Midwest Writing Center’s Great River Writers Retreat. Urban will be treated to a weeklong stay at the Benet House in Rock Island, Illinois, on the grounds of St. Mary’s Monastery. The week is to be devoted to working on a specific project that was outlined in the application process. Urban plans to focus on a work of historical fiction featuring a young female character living in London in 1792, when France was on the cusp of revolution. Urban describes the character as an activist and reformer who gets caught up in the debates over democracy and the rights of both men and women. Urban says the story developed from a novel she recently finished, which centers on a young woman mathematician in 19th century England, a time when female mathematicians were very rare. While working on that novel, Urban began to think of other feminist-themed historical novels. Urban is honored to have been chosen as the GRWR winner. “I applied last year and was a finalist. This year, the applicant region was increased to include four...

Amazon series to film in Muscatine

On Thursday, August 17, the Muscatine City Council held their regular council meeting. The meeting began with an opportunity for citizens to present issues not already on the agenda. One citizen, Roger Chapman, said that a few years ago, he requested a sign be put at the corner of Cyprus and 8th St. instructing semi-trucks not to use 8th St. as it is too narrow and difficult for semi-trucks to turn from. The sign was put in place, but Chapman requested that Traffic Commission take another look at the situation as semi-trucks are still using that street. The council...
