In 2009, Russ Miller and his wife, Jan, were led by their faith to start Affordable Metal Manufacturing. Affordable Metal Manufacturing of Muscatine is a small business of six employees. Affordable Metal manufactures cut-to-length, roll-formed steel for roofing, side walls, and trim. They roll form metal building panels and provide the necessary accessories for agricultural, residential, and light commercial markets.

Russ has started a lot of businesses and made a lot of investments in his lifetime, but this time was different. In his other business dealings, Russ would often say “God, help me,” but this time he felt the Lord saying, “Russ, this time YOU help me.”  So from then on, Russ and Jan decided that this will be God’s business, with the profits going to support faith-based organizations, with their purpose statement being “Making money to support faith-based missions.” Russ didn’t feel the call to the foreign mission field, but felt he should stay home and support missions locally and abroad.

Russ was raised on the conviction of giving. His father, Willis Miller, modeled to the family that the greatest blessings come from giving. Willis started the mission Water for Life in Haiti 30 years ago. The mission is to drill wells for fresh water. Now, Russ’s brother Leon runs the well machine operation that has drilled an estimated 1,200 wells since its conception. Russ said he is a lover of hard work, adventure, risk, and making money. The more money he makes, the more money he can give.

A large percentage of the company profits from Affordable Metal are donated. Affordable Metal Manufacturing supports local food pantries, Christian camps, churches, and other needs that arise. They support local missions, but their giving goes beyond the borders of Iowa and the United States.

Russ’s wife Jan passed away in February after a two-year battle with cancer. This year, Russ is taking his employees and their families on a mission trip to Haiti to drill a well in remembrance of Jan. He keeps his business close, starting every morning with prayer. Russ and his employees truly see the value of caring for each other and the integrity of the business.

Russ doesn’t know what the future will hold, but one thing in his future is certain, as Luke 6:38 says: Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full—pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back.
