Muscatine Lions Gladys Reif and Glen Reif are shown with one of several magnifying readers the local Lions Clubs have available for loan at no charge to needy visually impaired persons. The machines are easy to use for most users and will be delivered to qualified persons by the local Lions, who will demonstrate the operation of the unit. Ownership of the reader will remain with the Lions, and they will take care of any service, if needed.
For more information about availability of a reader, in Muscatine call Anton Vanicek at 563-264-2497, or in Fruitland call Wayne Shoultz at 264-2373.
Other local Lions projects focus on helping others to better sight and hearing. More than 4,000 Muscatine children have been vision screened by the Lions in cooperation with the University of Iowa Department of Ophthalmology. Another Lions program furnishes hearing aids to those needing but unable to afford to purchase them.
The Muscatine Lions meet at 6:30 p.m. the first Tuesday of the month and at noon the third Thursday at the lower level of MCSA, 312 Iowa Avenue.
For more information on Lions activities, contact Zach Halloran, club president, at 264-4163. Visitors are always welcome.
Riley Eichelberger (left) and Kimberly Woods, students at Muscatine Community College, each received a Muscatine Lion’s 2016 Scholarship Award, which was presented to them by Muscatine Lions Club President Zach Halloran (right) on September 15, 2016. The Muscatine Lions Scholarship Awards are an annual project of the local club.
